TCR UK: 2018-Present

One of many national touring car championships to utilise the TCR regulations debuted by the TCR International Series in 2015, TCR UK was launched in 2018. These regulations provide a relatively accessible means of racing full-on customer tin-tops, with models available from a wide range of manufacturers.

Given the popularity of the BTCC, TCR UK was always likely to face an uphill battle to establish itself in the British motorsport pyramid. After a difficult start however, the championship has grown to become a very interesting series as of late.

The first season of TCR UK mostly featured quite a small field, with hopes that the series could grow for its second year. Entry numbers for 2019 proved to be pretty dire unfortunately, and the championship merged with the new Touring Car Trophy in order to have a slightly more respectable grid.

From 2019 to 2021 TCR UK was essentially a sub-championship within the Touring Car Trophy; every driver in the series competed as part of the Touring Car Trophy, with TCR drivers also eligible for the TCR UK title. 2020 was a real low point for the series, in part due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with tiny entry numbers.

Things started to turn around in 2021 though, with TCR entry numbers getting back to the levels of the debut season. This prompted the organisers to scrap the Touring Car Trophy for 2022, with the series once again becoming simply TCR UK.

2022 was the first genuinely strong year of TCR UK, with a very respectable field and lots of entertaining racing. 2023 followed this up with more of the same, and it seems like TCR has finally managed to find a foothold in the UK racing scene.
