TCR New Zealand: 2021

One of many national touring car championships to utilise the TCR regulations debuted by the TCR International Series in 2015, TCR New Zealand contested a single season in 2021. These regulations provide a relatively accessible means of racing full-on customer tin-tops, with models available from a wide range of manufacturers.

A very briefly active championship, the TCR New Zealand series was contested in 2021 over just a single race weekend. Whether it really counts as a championship at that point is a fair question but, however you want to classify it, it is certainly one of the more obscure TCR events to be held so far.

It may have been an extremely short season, with a very small field, but there were some big names at least: Greg Murphy, Hayden Paddon, Paul Radisich and Chris van der Drift made up half the grid. A 2022 season with an expanded three-round calendar was announced, but this was scrapped by the end of 2021. Since then things have gone quiet, and it appears that the three races that were held in 2021 will remain the extent of TCR New Zealand’s existence.
