Renault Eurocup Clio: 2011-2014

When you think of one-make touring car racing, you probably think of Clio Cup. Renault has been an ever-present in the tin top world since it first launched one-make events with the 5, and the Clio is perhaps the model most closely associated with this style of racing.

The Eurocup Clio was introduced in 2011 as part of the World Series by Renault package, and was the first European Clio championship since the conclusion of the Clio V6 Trophy in the early 2000s. Paired alongside the Eurocup Mégane Trophy, Eurocup Clio was the more entry-level oriented series.

Unsurprisingly, the championship enjoyed very healthy grid sizes; numbers were consistently in the high 20s and often reached into the 30s. The racing was the usual gloriously chaotic action that Clios always seem to generate, with a calendar that visited many of the most iconic circuits in Europe.

It's not entirely clear why the championship ended when it did: grid numbers were strong, and Clio Cup continued on in national championships afterwards. The gradual winding down of the World Series by Renault may well be the cause, as the mid 2010s saw almost all of Renault's championships shut down. European Clio racing would return a few years later however, with the Clio Cup Series.
